Looking Natural and Feeling Comfortable in Front of the Camera

I know that being in front of the camera can feel intimidating — trust me, I get it! But I’ll guide you through every step and offer gentle cues to help you look and feel your best. Here are some tips to help you relax and embrace the moment, so the photos feel authentically you.

1. Breathe and Relax

This one sounds simple, but it’s key. Take a deep breath, let your shoulders relax down and back, and keep your jaw soft. I know it’s easy to tense up, but a relaxed body translates to a more natural, comfortable look in photos. You can think of it like meditation: breathe, let go of tension, and remember that you’re in a safe space.

2. Mind Your Posture

Posture plays a big part in how we hold ourselves. (I’m a habitual shoulder-huncher myself, so I know this can take some getting used to!) Think tall and open without being stiff. I’ll start you in a comfortable position, and we’ll make small adjustments from there to bring out your best angles.

3. What to Do with Your Hands

The classic question! If you ever feel unsure or a little awkward, that’s totally normal. Try staying in your base pose and using your hands naturally. Adjust your collar, fix your glasses, brush a piece of hair out of your face — these small actions look natural and add subtle movement to the image. Just move slowly and keep breathing; it makes all the difference.

4. Try Soft Movements

Small, slow movements look natural and give you something to focus on other than the camera. For example, look down and then slowly look back up at the camera. These little gestures bring a dynamic quality to the photo, and they’re a great way to shake off any stiffness.

5. Where to Look

When it comes to eye focus, there are a few easy go-to’s:

  • Look straight into the camera for an engaged, confident look.

  • If you’re with a partner or family, look at each other. Those candid, shared glances always come across beautifully.

  • If I suggest looking away from the camera, focus on a specific point in the distance rather than just “off into space.” This gives a sense of direction and purpose to your gaze.

Relax, breathe, and enjoy the process! I’ll be there to guide you through each pose, and by the end, you’ll feel like a natural in front of the lens. Let’s create images that are uniquely and authentically you.
